Product Overview

The DBX 131s is a single-channel 31-band graphic equalizer from the 2 Series, providing precise 1/3-octave frequency control in a compact 1U rack-mount format for live sound, monitor systems, and portable installed audio applications. As a single-channel 31-band graphic EQ with Constant Q filtering and 112 dB dynamic range, the DBX 131s delivers the same filter performance as the dual-channel 231s in a format that conserves rack space in single-channel applications. Available at Creation Networks.

Product Description

The DBX 131s provides one channel of 31-band 1/3-octave graphic equalization in a 1U chassis. The 31 ISO-centered frequency bands use Constant Q filter design, maintaining consistent bandwidth at all fader positions from plus 12 dB to minus 12 dB boost or cut. The electronically balanced XLR and TRS inputs and outputs accommodate connection to mixing consoles, loudspeaker management processors, and power amplifiers without additional adapters. The universal power supply accepts 100-240V at 50/60 Hz, and the 40 Hz high-pass filter at 18 dB/octave removes sub-bass content before it reaches the amplifier chain. A front-panel EQ bypass switch allows quick A/B comparison without removing the unit from the signal path. Dynamic range exceeds 112 dB, A-weighted, with THD+Noise less than 0.005% at +4 dBu and 1 kHz. The 131s is a single-channel version of the 231s, appropriate for applications that require per-channel equalization at a single send or output without the overhead of a dual-channel unit.

Key Features

  • Single-Channel 31-Band 1/3-Octave Constant Q EQ - One channel with 31 ISO-centered frequency bands and Constant Q filter behavior at all boost/cut settings.
  • 112 dB Dynamic Range - A-weighted dynamic range consistent with the 2 Series specification for professional audio applications.
  • XLR and TRS I/O - Electronically balanced XLR and TRS connectors for connection to mixing consoles and system processors.
  • Universal Power Supply - Accepts 100-240V at 50/60 Hz for international touring and rental applications.
  • 40Hz High-Pass Filter - 18 dB/octave slope removes sub-bass content from the signal path.
  • Front-Panel EQ Bypass - Instant A/B comparison switch for evaluation during system setup.
  • 1U Rack Format - Single-channel 1U chassis conserves rack space compared to dual-channel units in single-send applications.
  • Constant Q Filter Design - Consistent bandwidth at all boost/cut levels for predictable and repeatable equalization.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the DBX 131s and the DBX 231s?
The 131s is a single-channel unit providing one set of 31 ISO-centered frequency bands in a 1U chassis. The 231s is a dual-channel unit providing two independent sets of 31 bands in a 2U chassis. The 131s is appropriate when only one signal path requires equalization; the 231s is used when two independent channels need simultaneous equalization such as in stereo systems or dual monitor mixes.
Can two DBX 131s units be used as a substitute for one 231s?
Two 131s units provide the same total equalization capability as one 231s and can be used in that way. The total rack space consumed would be 2U, the same as the 231s. The main practical difference is that the 131s units operate as separate physical units without any shared controls, which may simplify or complicate workflow depending on the application.
What is the maximum boost or cut per band on the DBX 131s?
Each of the 31 bands provides plus or minus 12 dB of boost or cut. This range is appropriate for room correction and system voicing in most live sound and installed audio applications.
Does the DBX 131s have transformer balanced outputs?
No. The 131s uses electronically balanced I/O, consistent with the 2 Series specification. For applications requiring transformer balanced outputs and galvanic isolation, the DBX 12 Series equalizers (1231 or 1215) are the appropriate choice.
Is the DBX 131s suitable for a single monitor mix send?
Yes. The single-channel format and 1U chassis make the 131s well suited for inserting in a single monitor mix send, in-ear feed, or main system output where only one signal path requires frequency correction. Using a 131s instead of a 231s conserves both rack space and budget when only one channel is needed.
What rack space does the DBX 131s require?
The 131s occupies 1U (1.75 inches) of space in a standard 19-inch equipment rack.
