Product Overview

The Allied Telesis AT-X220-28GS-10 is a fully managed Allied Telesis x220 28-port SFP fiber Layer 3 switch designed for fiber-based access and distribution deployments. With 24 x 100/1000X SFP access ports and 4 x 100/1000X SFP uplink ports, it enables high-density all-fiber connectivity at the network edge — ideal for distributed campus environments, multi-dwelling unit (MDU) deployments, and wiring closets where copper cabling is impractical or where extended reach is required. Available from Creation Networks, an authorized Allied Telesis reseller.

Product Description

Allied Telesis AT-X220-28GS-10

The AT-X220-28GS-10 is purpose-built for environments that rely on fiber for extended-reach connectivity. All 28 ports are 100/1000X SFP slots, accepting standard SFP transceivers for single-mode or multi-mode fiber, enabling link distances from a few hundred meters up to 80km or beyond depending on transceiver selection. The 24 access SFP ports connect downstream fiber devices while the 4 uplink SFP ports connect to distribution or core switches. Active Fiber Monitoring (AFM) continuously monitors all fiber links to detect unauthorized physical taps, protecting sensitive data on both short and long-distance fiber runs. AMF Plus (Autonomous Management Framework) enables centralized management across the entire network domain with zero-touch provisioning, automated configuration backup, and plug-and-play node recovery. EPSRing and G.8032 ERPS deliver sub-50ms ring protection switching for resilient fiber backbone designs. AlliedWare Plus provides Layer 3 routing (static and RIP) with optional OSPFv2 and BGP4 via the AT-FL-x220-01 premium license. Network security features include IEEE 802.1x, MAC authentication, web authentication, DHCP snooping, STP root guard, and comprehensive access control lists. The x220-28GS supports management stacking via AMF, treating the entire managed domain as a single virtual device. Power consumption is 52W from the single fixed AC PSU included with the -10 (US power cord) SKU. The switch is FIPS 140-2 certified, IPv6 Ready, and JITC listed, qualifying it for US Government and DoD deployments.

Key Features

  • 24 x 100/1000X SFP access ports — Support SM and MM fiber transceivers for extended-reach edge connectivity.
  • 4 x 100/1000X SFP uplink ports — High-speed uplinks to distribution or core layer switches.
  • All-fiber port configuration — No copper RJ-45 ports; purpose-built for fiber-only access deployments.
  • Active Fiber Monitoring (AFM) — Detects unauthorized physical taps on all fiber links to prevent eavesdropping.
  • AMF Plus management — Zero-touch provisioning, automated config backup, and single-pane management across AMF domains.
  • EPSRing and G.8032 ERPS — Fast-failover ring protection for resilient fiber backbone topologies.
  • Layer 3 routing — Static and RIP routing; optional OSPFv2 and BGP4 via premium license.
  • IEEE 802.1x / MAC / Web authentication — Tri-authentication with dynamic VLAN assignment for network access control.
  • DHCP snooping and ACLs — Comprehensive attack mitigation including STP root guard and BPDU protection.
  • FIPS 140-2 certified — Validated cryptographic module for secure government and defense deployments.
  • JITC listed (DoDIN APL) — Certified for use on US Government and Department of Defense networks.
  • 52W fixed AC PSU — Single fixed power supply with US power cord included; compact 1U form factor.

Typical Applications

  • All-fiber wiring closet aggregation in campus or multi-building environments
  • MDU (multi-dwelling unit) and hospitality fiber-to-the-room deployments
  • Long-distance edge connectivity where copper reach is insufficient
  • US Government and DoD campus fiber distribution (FIPS 140-2, JITC APL)
  • Resilient ring-based fiber backbone using EPSRing or G.8032 ERPS
  • Secure fiber network segments with Active Fiber Monitoring against eavesdropping

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What types of SFP transceivers are compatible with the AT-X220-28GS-10?
All 28 SFP slots accept standard 100Base-FX and 1000Base-X SFP transceivers, including Allied Telesis single-mode (LC, BiDi) and multi-mode options. Transceiver reach ranges from 550m (MM SR) to 80km+ (SM ZR). Consult Allied Telesis transceiver compatibility documentation for the full approved list.
Q: Does the x220-28GS support hardware stacking like VCStack?
No. The x220-28GS does not have dedicated VCStack hardware stacking ports. However, it supports AMF (Autonomous Management Framework) management stacking, which allows the entire AMF domain to be managed as a single virtual device without hardware stacking cables.
Q: Is the AT-X220-28GS-10 suitable for US Government deployments?
Yes. The x220 series is FIPS 140-2 certified and JITC listed on the DoDIN Approved Products List, qualifying it for US Government and Department of Defense network deployments.
Q: What Layer 3 routing protocols are supported?
AlliedWare Plus includes static routing and RIPv1/v2 by default. The AT-FL-x220-8032 license adds G.8032 ring protection. Advanced routing (OSPFv2, BGP4) is available via a premium feature license.
Q: Does Active Fiber Monitoring work on all 28 ports?
Yes. AFM monitors all fiber links connected to the switch to detect unauthorized physical taps that could allow eavesdropping on network traffic.
Q: What authentication methods are supported for network access control?
The x220-28GS supports IEEE 802.1x port-based authentication, MAC-based authentication, and web-based authentication (captive portal). Tri-authentication allows all three methods to run simultaneously on a single port with dynamic VLAN assignment.
Q: Does this switch support redundant power supplies?
No. The AT-X220-28GS-10 includes a single fixed AC power supply. Redundant PSU is not supported on this model. For dual-PSU models, consider the x530L-28GPX or x530L-52GPX series.
Q: Where can I purchase the AT-X220-28GS-10?
Available from Creation Networks, an authorized Allied Telesis reseller. Visit creationnetworks.net for pricing and availability.
