Allen & Heath ZED-436 — Professional 36-Channel 4-Bus Analog Mixer
The Allen & Heath ZED-436 is a 36-channel, 4-bus analog mixing console engineered for demanding live sound production, house of worship audio, and project studio recording applications. With 32 mono channels equipped with DuoPre mic preamps and a comprehensive 4-band EQ derived from the GL2400 console design, the ZED-436 delivers the signal integrity and routing flexibility that professional audio engineers require. The mixer integrates a built-in USB 1.1 stereo interface for direct recording to Mac or Windows computers, making it a practical solution for broadcast studio environments and live recording sessions. Its 7x2 matrix routing, six auxiliary sends, and talkback facilities place it firmly in the working-console category at its price point.
Product Description
The ZED-436 analog mixer for live sound and recording provides 32 mono input channels, each with a Neutrik XLR mic input and a 1/4" balanced/unbalanced line input, DuoPre preamps with phantom power individually switchable per channel, and a high-pass filter at 100 Hz. The four-band equalizer on every mono channel features sweepable hi-mid and lo-mid bands — an EQ topology borrowed from the acclaimed GL2400 — giving engineers precise tonal control over a wide frequency range.
Two additional stereo input channels accommodate keyboards, submixers, and stereo playback devices via 1/4" connectors. Six auxiliary sends (two pre-fader, two post-fader, and two switchable pre/post) support monitor mixes and outboard effects routing simultaneously. Four subgroup outputs with insert points allow grouping and dynamics processing of submixes before they reach the main bus. The 7x2 matrix extends routing capability for delay speakers, broadcast feeds, and zone outputs.
Insert points on all 32 mono channels, all four group outputs, and the stereo and mono main outputs enable integration of outboard compressors, gates, and equalizers without patch bays. The 1/4" direct outputs on all mono channels route pre-fader signals to a multitrack recorder. The USB 1.1 stereo interface supports 2-in/2-out audio at sample rates of 32, 44.1, and 48 kHz at 16-bit depth — driver-free on compatible operating systems. A dedicated XLR talkback input with adjustable level routes to the first four auxiliaries or all main outputs, an important feature for conference room audio systems and production environments with separated monitor mixes.
Output metering includes 12-segment LED masters and 4-segment LED bus meters, giving engineers a clear view of levels without crowding the control surface. Balanced XLR main outputs (stereo L/R and mono) with insert points, two matrix outputs, two headphone outputs (1/4" and 3.5mm), and RCA 2-track I/O complete the analog output complement. The ZED-436 operates from 100–240 VAC worldwide and draws a maximum of 60 W.
Key Features
- 32 DuoPre Mic Preamps — Neutrik XLR connectors on every mono channel with individually switchable 48V phantom power and up to +63 dB of gain range for low-output ribbon and condenser microphones.
- GL2400-Derived 4-Band EQ — Sweepable hi-mid (500 Hz–15 kHz) and lo-mid (35 Hz–1 kHz) parametric bands plus fixed shelving at 12 kHz and 80 Hz provide surgical tonal control on all 32 mono channels.
- Insert Points on Every Mono Channel — 1/4" TRS inserts on all mono channels, group outputs, and main outputs support seamless integration of hardware dynamics processors and equalizers.
- Direct Outputs on All Mono Channels — Pre-fader 1/4" TRS direct outputs feed multitrack recorders for isolated track capture alongside the live mix.
- Six Flexible Aux Sends — Two pre-fader, two post-fader, and two user-switchable sends with independent level controls drive monitor mixes and effects processors independently.
- 4-Bus Group Architecture — Four subgroup buses with insert points allow submix processing and signal routing to the main LR or directly to outputs for zone-based distribution.
- 7x2 Matrix Routing — Feeds delay stacks, broadcast outputs, and additional zones from a flexible matrix that accepts the main LR, mono, and all four group buses as sources.
- USB 1.1 Stereo Interface — 2-in/2-out digital audio connection to Mac and Windows computers at up to 48 kHz for direct-to-DAW recording without additional hardware.
- Integrated Talkback — External XLR talkback mic input with level control routes to the first four aux sends or all main outputs for engineer communication during live productions.
- Dual Headphone Outputs — Both 1/4" TRS and 3.5mm headphone outputs provide monitoring flexibility at the mix position.
Typical Applications
- Live Sound Production — The 32-channel input count, six aux sends, and 4-bus architecture suit mid-to-large-scale live events, concert venues, and touring productions requiring comprehensive monitor and effects routing.
- House of Worship — Individual phantom power switching, talkback routing, and direct outputs support complex worship audio setups with multiple monitor mixes and multitrack recording.
- Broadcast Studio — Matrix outputs, direct outputs, and USB interface provide the signal routing paths needed for broadcast feeds, intercom systems, and on-air monitoring.
- Recording Studio — The 32 direct outputs and USB interface make the ZED-436 a capable tracking console for project studios recording live bands to multitrack workstations.
- Conference Room Audio — The talkback facilities, matrix routing, and aux sends suit conference room installations requiring flexible microphone management and zone distribution.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the ZED-436 compatible with standard stage boxes or analog multicore cables?
- Yes. The ZED-436 uses standard XLR and 1/4" TRS connectors throughout, making it fully compatible with conventional analog multicore snakes, stage boxes, and patch bays without any proprietary cabling requirements.
- Can I use the USB interface with popular DAW software on Windows?
- The ZED-436 USB interface is class-compliant and recognized by Mac and Windows computers. On Windows, it is compatible with ASIO-capable DAWs; no separate driver installation is required for basic 2-in/2-out operation at supported sample rates.
- Does the ZED-436 support multitrack recording, or is it limited to stereo USB output?
- The USB interface provides 2-in/2-out stereo audio to and from a computer. For multitrack recording, the 32 balanced 1/4" direct outputs on the mono channels feed an external multitrack recorder or audio interface simultaneously with the USB stereo stream.
- Can I apply external hardware compression or EQ to individual channels?
- Yes. The 1/4" TRS insert points on all 32 mono channels allow series insertion of hardware dynamics processors or equalizers using standard Y-cables or insert-wired patch bays.
- What is the warranty coverage for the ZED-436?
- Allen & Heath products sold through authorized dealers in the United States carry a limited warranty. Contact Creation Networks at the time of purchase for current warranty terms and registration information.
- Is the ZED-436 suitable for a house of worship with in-ear monitor systems?
- Yes. Six auxiliary sends — including pre-fader options for monitor mixing — accommodate multiple in-ear or floor monitor mixes independently of the main program mix. The individually switchable phantom power supports condenser microphones throughout the stage.
- Can the talkback signal reach the stage monitors and the main PA simultaneously?
- The talkback routing is selectable: it can be sent to the first four auxiliary outputs for monitor engineer and performer communication, or switched to all main outputs for venue-wide announcements — but not both simultaneously without an external splitter.
