Product Overview

The Allen & Heath ZED-18 is an 18-channel analog mixing console built for engineers who need professional-grade audio performance in a compact, portable format. It combines 10 mono microphone/line channels with 4 stereo channels, Allen & Heath's proprietary DuoPre preamps, and a full-featured output section, making it a capable front-of-house, monitor, and studio recording tool. A built-in USB 1.1 interface enables direct stereo recording and playback to Mac or Windows computers with no additional drivers required. The ZED-18 is equally at home on a live stage, in a house of worship, or in a project recording studio where analog signal path and hands-on control are preferred over touchscreen workflows.

Product Description

The ZED-18 represents Allen & Heath's commitment to transparent analog signal paths in a mid-size format. The DuoPre microphone preamplifiers on all 10 mono channels provide up to 63dB of gain with an equivalent input noise of -127 dBu, delivering clean, quiet amplification for condenser microphones, ribbon mics, and dynamic sources alike. Global +48V phantom power supports condenser microphone use across all mono channels simultaneously.

Each mono channel is equipped with a 3-band EQ — high shelf at 12kHz, sweepable mid from 120Hz to 4kHz, and low shelf at 80Hz, each with ±15dB of cut or boost — along with a switchable 100Hz high-pass filter for eliminating low-frequency rumble and handling noise. Four stereo channels handle keyboards, playback devices, and stereo effects returns via balanced 1/4" TRS inputs with 2-band EQ. Insert points on all mono channels and the stereo bus allow outboard compression or EQ to be patched directly into the signal path.

Four independent mono auxiliary sends allow flexible monitor and effects routing: send pre-fader for stage monitor mixes or post-fader for effects returns. The stereo RCA auxiliary return and 2-track input expand connectivity for playback sources, and the 2-track RCA output provides a convenient feed for external recording devices. The main output section features balanced XLR stereo outputs at +21dBu maximum, a mono balanced TRS output, and dual source-selectable alternate outputs via RCA.

The built-in USB 1.1 interface delivers 2-channel 16-bit audio at 32, 44.1, or 48kHz to any standard computer without requiring a dedicated driver installation. This makes the ZED-18 an effective tool for direct-to-DAW recording of a stereo mix or for inserting computer playback into the mix. Dual 12-segment LED meters on the master section provide clear visual monitoring of output levels, and a dedicated headphone output with level control is available via both 1/4" and 3.5mm jacks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ZED-18 require a driver to use the USB audio interface?
No. The USB interface is class-compliant and works with macOS and Windows without installing any drivers. The USB provides a stereo send/return at up to 48kHz, 16-bit resolution.
Can phantom power be switched per channel, or is it global?
Phantom power (+48V DC) is globally switched — it applies to all 10 mono XLR mic inputs simultaneously. If you are mixing ribbon microphones with condensers, take care to confirm ribbon compatibility before engaging phantom power.
Are the insert points pre- or post-EQ?
The insert points on mono channels are post-preamp and post-HPF, but pre-EQ. This allows outboard dynamics to process the full-range signal before the channel EQ shapes it.
What is the maximum output level of the XLR main outputs?
The balanced XLR stereo main outputs deliver a maximum of +21 dBu with a nominal output level of 0 dBu, providing 21dB of headroom above nominal.
Can the ZED-18 be used for in-ear monitor mixing?
The four mono aux sends support pre-fader routing, which is suitable for stage monitor feeds. However, dedicated personal monitor mixers such as the Allen & Heath ME-1 would provide greater per-musician control.
Is the ZED-18 suitable for permanent installation in a conference room?
While the ZED-18 is designed for portable use, it can be placed in a lectern or AV rack in low-profile installations. It does not support rack mounting without a custom solution.
What is the difference between the ZED-18 and the ZED-22FX?
The ZED-22FX offers more channels, built-in digital effects, and FX returns, while the ZED-18 focuses on a clean, effects-free signal path with a more compact footprint.
