Allen & Heath AH-ZED10 – Multipurpose Mini Mixer with USB Interface

Product Overview

The Allen & Heath AH-ZED10 is the compact, no-frills version of the ZED-10 series, providing four XLR mic/line inputs, two Class-A FET Hi-Z guitar instrument inputs, two stereo line inputs, a USB digital audio interface, and a comprehensive monitoring section — all without an onboard effects processor. It is suited for users who prefer to manage effects externally or use software effects within their DAW, and who prioritize clean signal quality and straightforward routing over an integrated effects engine. The 3-band MusiQ EQ on all four mono channels and the -127 dBu EIN specification reflect Allen & Heath's professional-grade analog design at an accessible price.

Product Description

The ZED10 is functionally the same as the ZED-10FX with the effects processor removed. For users who rely on software effects, outboard gear, or simply don't require onboard effects, the ZED10 delivers the same preamp quality, routing architecture, and build standard as the ZED-10FX at a lower price point. This makes it the preferred choice for recording studios, training rooms, and installation environments where effects are handled elsewhere in the signal chain.

Channels 1 through 4 carry XLR mic inputs with up to 60 dB of gain and 48V phantom power. Channels 1 and 2 include balanced/unbalanced TRS line inputs. Channels 3 and 4 include Class-A FET Hi-Z inputs with 26 dB boost switches, allowing electric guitars and basses to be connected directly without a DI box. All four mono channels have 3-band MusiQ EQ with a sweepable midrange band, providing the same tonal shaping capability as the ZED-10FX series.

The MusiQ technology in the EQ section adjusts the filter bandwidth proportionally to the amount of boost or cut, so narrow boosts produce a tighter, more focused correction while gentle broad cuts sound natural. This behavior is consistent with how professional engineers use parametric EQ and results in more usable tonal adjustments across the range of cut and boost values.

The aux send is pre-fader, supporting an independent monitor mix that is isolated from the main PA output. The FX send (post-fader) can be used to route signal to an external effects processor when onboard effects are not required. The separate stereo record bus allows channels to be selectively routed to a recording device or USB output independently of what is sent to the main PA. This flexibility makes the ZED10 suitable for simultaneous live mixing and recording without compromise.

The USB interface provides 2-in/2-out audio at up to 48 kHz, connecting to Mac or Windows computers for direct recording or playback. An illuminated PFL (Pre-Fade Listen) indicator and 12-bar LED meters provide visual level monitoring. The monitoring section includes a 1/4-inch headphone output and a separate monitor speaker output, supporting the common requirement for both headphone cue monitoring and control room speaker feed simultaneously.

Build quality and chassis design follow the ZED series standard with individual vertically-mounted channel circuit boards and metal-fastened rotary controls. Dimensions are 13.2 x 10.8 x 3.7 inches, consistent with the ZED-10FX form factor. The ZED10 is not rack mountable and is intended for desktop use or permanent surface mounting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between the AH-ZED10 and the ZED-10FX?
The AH-ZED10 does not include an onboard digital effects processor. The ZED-10FX adds a 24-bit effects processor with 16 presets and TAP tempo. Both units share the same input/output configuration, EQ, and USB interface.
Can the ZED10 be used as a USB audio interface without using it as a mixer?
Yes. The ZED10 can function as a USB audio interface for a Mac or Windows computer. However, all audio routed to the USB output passes through the mixer's channel strips and master bus.
Does the ZED10 support condenser microphones?
Yes. The ZED10 provides 48V phantom power for condenser microphone use. Phantom power is switchable on or off.
Is the ZED10 suitable for permanent installation in a conference room or classroom?
Yes. Allen & Heath identifies hotels, small churches, and schools as typical installation environments for the ZED-10 series. The compact desktop form factor and comprehensive I/O suit permanent surface mounting.
Can I add external effects to the ZED10 via the FX send output?
Yes. The post-fader FX send output can be connected to any external effects processor. The processed return can be brought back into the mixer via one of the stereo line inputs.
Does the ZED10 work with Mac without a driver?
Yes. The ZED10 operates as a standard USB class-compliant audio device on Mac without requiring a driver. Windows users may benefit from the Allen & Heath ASIO driver for low-latency recording.
Is the ZED10 the same as the ZED-10 (older model)?
The AH-ZED10 is Allen & Heath's current product SKU for the ZED-10 without effects. If you are comparing to an older ZED-10 listing, verify the firmware generation and specifications with Allen & Heath or your dealer to confirm equivalency.
