AIDA Imaging CCU-IP – VISCA Serial and IP PTZ Camera Controller

Product Overview

The AIDA Imaging CCU-IP is a compact PTZ camera controller that supports both VISCA over IP (UDP/TCP) and Sony VISCA serial (RS-232/RS-422) protocols, enabling centralized control of up to seven PTZ cameras from a single desktop unit. It is designed for AV integrators, broadcast engineers, and production teams who need a hardware controller capable of bridging legacy serial VISCA camera infrastructure and modern IP-based PTZ camera systems without separate control system programming or third-party middleware. An integrated LCD display and LED-backlit silicone buttons provide clear operational feedback in production environments with variable lighting conditions.

Product Description

As AV and broadcast facilities transition from serial VISCA camera control to IP-based PTZ workflows, many production environments end up with a mix of legacy serial cameras and newer IP cameras in the same system. The CCU-IP addresses this directly by supporting both control protocols simultaneously, allowing a single operator to manage PTZ cameras across both infrastructure types from one controller without reconfiguration or protocol bridging hardware.

AIDA Imaging CCU-IP VISCA serial and IP PTZ camera controller desktop unit

VISCA over UDP and TCP gives the controller flexibility to address IP PTZ cameras on the local network using either connection-oriented (TCP) or connectionless (UDP) transport. Sony VISCA RS-232/RS-422 serial support covers the broad installed base of serial-controlled PTZ cameras. Up to seven cameras can be addressed and switched between from the front panel. The LCD display shows camera number and preset status. PoE compatibility allows the unit to be powered from a PoE-capable switch, reducing the need for a local AC outlet at the operator position.

Key Features

  • VISCA over IP (UDP/TCP) — Controls IP-networked PTZ cameras via VISCA over UDP or TCP.
  • Sony VISCA Serial (RS-232/RS-422) — Supports legacy serial VISCA camera control for RS-232 and RS-422 connected cameras.
  • Controls Up to 7 Cameras — Addresses and switches between up to seven PTZ cameras from a single controller.
  • Integrated LCD Display — Provides operational feedback on camera selection and preset status directly on the controller.
  • LED-Backlit Silicone Buttons — Durable, wear-resistant buttons legible in variable production lighting conditions.
  • PoE Compatible Power — Can be powered from a PoE-capable network switch, eliminating a local AC outlet at the operator position.
  • Dual Protocol Support — Manages mixed legacy and IP PTZ camera environments from one device.
  • Desktop Form Factor — 12.625" × 7" × 4.25" at 4 lbs for a production desk, director's table, or broadcast control position.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the CCU-IP control cameras from manufacturers other than AIDA Imaging?
Yes. The CCU-IP uses Sony VISCA protocol over both IP and serial interfaces. Any PTZ camera accepting Sony VISCA RS-232, RS-422, or VISCA over UDP/TCP is compatible, including cameras from Sony, Panasonic, PTZOptics, and BirdDog.
What is the difference between VISCA over UDP and VISCA over TCP?
TCP provides connection-oriented, acknowledged communication — each command is confirmed as received, improving reliability over congested networks. UDP is connectionless and faster but without guaranteed delivery. The CCU-IP supports both to match different camera configurations.
Does the CCU-IP require a PC or software to operate?
No. The CCU-IP is a standalone hardware controller with an integrated LCD and front-panel buttons. It operates independently of any production platform.
Is it compatible with the AIDA Imaging PTZ-NDI-X18B and PTZ-NDI-X18W cameras?
Yes. Those cameras support VISCA over IP, which the CCU-IP controls via its UDP/TCP IP control interface.
What PoE standard is required to power the CCU-IP?
Confirm the specific PoE standard (802.3af or 802.3at) with AIDA Imaging or Creation Networks before ordering to ensure the switch port provides sufficient power.
