  • PCAP (projected capacitive) — glass-bonded, zero-bezel touch with the most responsive, phone-like feel. Found on -PT models such as M651-PT, ME551-PT, and MA551-PT.
  • IR (infrared) — a bezel-framed sensor grid over tempered glass, tolerant of gloves and styluses and lower in cost. Found on -IR models such as M431-IR, ME651-IR, and MA491-IR.

Specifying Touch on a Commercial Display

Touch is not a single feature. A wayfinding kiosk in a hotel lobby and a gloved technician on a factory floor need opposite things, and the -PT and -IR suffixes on Sharp MultiSync models are how you choose. PCAP models bond the sensor to the glass for a flush, phone-like surface with no parallax, which reads as premium in public-facing installations. IR models place a sensor grid in a raised frame, which costs less and keeps working with gloves, styluses, and anything else a user brings to the screen.

Q: What does the -PT suffix mean on a Sharp display model number?
A: -PT indicates a factory-installed projected capacitive (PCAP) touch layer. -IR indicates an infrared touch frame. Both are installed at the factory, not added in the field.

Q: Can I add touch to a non-touch Sharp display later?
A: Third-party overlay frames exist, but they add depth, affect the bezel profile, and are not covered by the display warranty. Ordering the -PT or -IR variant up front is almost always the better outcome.

Q: Does a Sharp touch display need a PC?
A: MultiSync -PT and -IR displays present as a USB touch device and need a connected PC, SDM slot-in PC, or media player. AQUOS BOARD panels have on-board whiteboarding and need no PC.
