What is a Crestron DMPS3-4K-350-C, and what is it doing in these classrooms?

The Crestron DMPS3-4K-350-C is a 3-Series DigitalMedia presentation system — a video switcher, a control processor and an audio amplifier in one rack-mounted box — and in Building 1900 at Chabot College there is one sitting in the lectern of each of the three rooms we walked. It takes the lectern PC and a guest laptop, routes one of them to the room's display, and drives the room's loudspeakers.

Chabot College asked us into three rooms in Building 1900. Each has a wood-cased lectern with a small rack inside it, and the photographs from the walk show what the rooms have been running on. The systems were live when we saw them — the front panel reads System Power: On.

That is a competent classroom system of its generation. Combining a switcher, a controller and an amplifier in one box is exactly what a teaching room wants, because it is one thing to specify, one thing to rack and one thing to power. It is also exactly what makes the room a single point of failure when the platform ages out.

What made it hard

A college building runs on a class schedule, not a business day. Rooms are booked back to back through the teaching term, which means the usable windows are between terms, during breaks, or overnight. Three rooms in one building is a small job that is entirely governed by when you are allowed in.

Assistive listening is the other constraint, and it is not optional. Each rack has an LT-800 transmitter in it, so these rooms are already meeting an accessibility obligation. Whatever replaces the system has to keep meeting it on day one, including the receivers the campus already owns and the frequencies they are set to.

What is in a classroom lectern rack?

Five things, in these rooms: an HP EliteDesk room PC, the presentation and control system, a Listen Technologies LT-800 assistive listening transmitter, rack power, and blanking panels closing off the bays below. That is the whole inventory — a teaching lectern is a much shorter equipment list than a conference room, which is part of why classroom estates are worth standardising.

What is an assistive listening system, and is it required in a classroom?

An assistive listening system sends the room's audio straight to a receiver worn by a student with hearing loss, bypassing distance and room acoustics — and in a teaching space with amplified sound it is generally a legal requirement rather than an optional extra. These rooms meet that with a Listen Technologies LT-800 FM transmitter in each lectern rack.

The part that catches upgrades out is the receivers. The campus owns a pool of them, they are tuned to the transmitters that are in the rooms today, and they are handed to students at the start of a class. That gives an upgrade three honest options: reuse the existing transmitter, replace it with something the existing receivers still work with, or replace the receivers too.

The third option is a budget line and a distribution problem, not a footnote. It is worth deciding before the equipment list is signed, because it is the kind of item that gets discovered in week one of a term rather than during design.

What happens when a classroom control platform is discontinued?

The room stops being supportable well before it stops working. Parts availability dries up first, then firmware updates stop, and eventually the control program itself becomes something nobody can safely recompile — so a room that still switches a laptop to a projector every morning is one failure away from being unrepairable.

A combined switcher, controller and amplifier concentrates that risk into a single product. There is no partial failure mode where you lose switching but keep audio, and no path where you replace the control processor and leave the rest. One discontinued box takes the whole room with it, and on a teaching estate it takes every room built to the same standard at roughly the same time.

What makes the eventual change cheap is documentation held before it is needed: the control system source code, a current equipment list, and a record of what is actually in each lectern. With those, replacing a platform is a swap. Without them it is a redesign, and the redesign costs more than the hardware. That is the work behind our control system and DSP programming scope.

Teaching rooms are the hardest AV estate to keep in spec, because they are used by a rotating population who have eight minutes between classes and no reason to report a fault that they worked around. A room degrades quietly for a whole term and then gets reported in week one of the next one.

What holds it together is a schedule rather than a phone number: periodic sweeps that check every room against the same list, firmware kept to a known-good baseline across all three rooms rather than whichever version each one happened to ship with, and a documented closeout package so a technician arriving in room 1906 already knows what is in the lectern.

Can we keep our existing projector, lectern and room PC in a classroom AV upgrade?

Often yes. These rooms already have an HP EliteDesk room PC and a lectern with a usable internal rack, both reusable. The question to answer first is whether the existing cabling supports the resolution and signal type the new system expects.

A reused lectern and reused pathways are the single biggest cost difference between a system swap and a room rebuild. Confirm both before the budget is set, not after.

What happens to assistive listening when the classroom AV is replaced?

It has to keep working from day one. These rooms run a Listen Technologies LT-800 FM transmitter, and the campus owns receivers tuned to it. Either the transmitter is reused, or it is replaced with something the existing receivers still work with, or the receivers get replaced too.

What is the difference between a classroom presentation system and a conference room AV system?

A classroom system is built around one presenter and a fixed lectern: reinforce the instructor, show one source at a time, and be operable by someone who has never seen the room. A conference room is built around a table of equal participants and a far end that has to hear all of them.

How long is a classroom out of service during an AV upgrade?

A like-for-like presentation system swap inside an existing lectern is typically a day or less per room, scheduled into a break or overnight so no class is displaced. It grows once cabling, display or lectern change, because those touch the room fabric rather than the rack.

On a teaching building the constraint is almost never the labour. It is the calendar.

What does a community college district IT review involve before new AV goes on the network?

Typically five things: which network the classroom devices sit on, whether they need internet access, how the room PC is imaged and managed, which firmware versions are approved, and who holds admin credentials after handover. Agreeing that before equipment is ordered is faster than agreeing it during a break week.
