What is the Netgear GSM7252L-10000S Layer 3 license?

The Netgear GSM7252L-10000S is the Layer 3 license upgrade for the NETGEAR ProSAFE M5300-52G (GSM7252S) managed switch. The M5300-52G ships as a Layer 2+ switch; this license unlocks full Layer 3 software, including dynamic routing, VRRP and multicast routing between VLANs. Netgear supplies it as an electronic SKU, with the license key delivered by email.

How does the Netgear GSM7252L work?

The license is applied to an installed GSM7252S, a 48-port Gigabit switch with 4 shared SFP ports and 2 built-in 10GBASE-T/SFP+ combo ports. With the license in place, Netgear lists Layer 3 features including RIP, OSPF and OSPFv3, VRRP, ECMP, IPv6 routing, PIM-SM, PIM-DM, DVMRP, IGMP and MLD proxy, multicast routing between subnets and VLANs, and a DHCP IPv4/IPv6 server.

In an M5300 stack, the Stack Master decides the software package. A Layer 2+ master with its Layer 3 license runs Layer 3 software across the whole stack, so other members can stay Layer 2+. Netgear recommends a second Layer 3 unit as Secondary Master; otherwise a master failure drops the stack back to Layer 2+.

For this reason, multicast-heavy AV networks often license both the master and the secondary master. For new builds, consider the fully managed Netgear M4300-52G-PoE+ from the current M4300 line.

What are the key features of the Netgear GSM7252L?

  • Layer 3 for the M5300-52G — upgrades the GSM7252S from Layer 2+ to Layer 3 software.
  • Dynamic routing — adds RIP, OSPF, OSPFv3 and ECMP.
  • Gateway redundancy — adds VRRP for redundant default gateways.
  • Multicast routing — adds PIM-SM, PIM-DM and DVMRP between VLANs and subnets.
  • IPv6 routing — adds IPv6 routing, OSPFv3 and DHCPv6 services.
  • Stack-wide Layer 3 — a licensed Stack Master runs Layer 3 across the stack.
  • Electronic delivery — license key delivered by email; nothing ships.

Where is the Netgear GSM7252L typically used?

  • Government spaces
  • Auditoriums
  • Training rooms
  • Commercial meeting spaces

Frequently Asked Questions

Which switch does this license work with?

The M5300-52G, Netgear model GSM7252S. PoE+ models use a different license (GSM7252PL for the GSM7252PS).

Do I need a license on every switch in the stack?

Netgear states that a licensed Layer 3 Stack Master runs Layer 3 for the whole stack. A second licensed unit as Secondary Master keeps Layer 3 running if the master fails.

How is the license delivered?

It is an electronic SKU; the license key arrives by email.

Is this useful for AV-over-IP networks?

Yes, where multicast must be routed between VLANs or subnets, since the license adds PIM and DVMRP. Creation Networks designs these networks across the Netgear product line.

Where can I find other Netgear licenses?

See Netgear network licenses and software.
