What is the Netgear GSM7228L-10000S Layer 3 license?
The Netgear GSM7228L-10000S is the Layer 3 license upgrade for the NETGEAR ProSAFE M5300-28G (GSM7228S) managed switch. The M5300-28G ships as a Layer 2+ switch; this license unlocks full Layer 3 software, including dynamic routing, VRRP and multicast routing between VLANs and subnets. Netgear supplies it as an electronic SKU, with the license key delivered by email.
How does the Netgear GSM7228L work?
The license is applied to an installed GSM7228S, a 24-port Gigabit switch with 4 shared SFP ports and 2 built-in 10GBASE-T/SFP+ combo ports. Once applied, Netgear lists Layer 3 features including RIP, OSPF and OSPFv3, VRRP, ECMP, IPv6 routing, PIM-SM, PIM-DM, DVMRP, IGMP and MLD proxy, multicast routing between subnets and VLANs, and a DHCP IPv4/IPv6 server.
In an M5300 stack, the Stack Master determines the software package. When the master is a Layer 2+ unit with its Layer 3 license, the entire stack runs Layer 3 software, and other members can remain Layer 2+ units. Netgear recommends setting a second Layer 3 unit as Secondary Master so the stack keeps its Layer 3 configuration if the master fails.
