What is the Magewell Modator 2U encoder and decoder chassis?

The Magewell Modator 2U is a 2RU rackmount chassis that holds up to 10 hot-swappable Magewell encoder and decoder modules, each converting video and audio to or from NDI and other IP streams on its own. Redundant hot-swap power supplies and centralized cooling keep it running 24/7, and a front touchscreen shows the status of every module. It replaces racks of standalone converters with one dense, serviceable frame for broadcast, control rooms, campuses and large AV-over-IP systems.

How does the Magewell Modator 2U work?

Each of the ten slots accepts a Modator module — HDMI to NDI encoders, NDI to HDMI or AIO decoders, SDI encoders and streaming encoders — in any mix. Modules have their own network connections and web interfaces and work independently, while the chassis supplies power and cooling. Modules and the dual power supplies can be swapped while the chassis runs, so one failed part does not take down the other channels.

The front LCD touchscreen powers the chassis on and off, shows the status of the chassis and each module, and sets network parameters. A Gigabit Ethernet and USB-C port on the chassis handle configuration, and the frame and every module can be managed centrally in Magewell Control Hub or through HTTP APIs. Power draw is up to 200 W for the chassis and 20 W per slot.
