Product Overview
The Lab Gruppen D 40:4L is a 4,000W 4-channel installation amplifier with onboard Lake DSP and Dante digital audio networking in a 1U rack-mount chassis. Positioned as a mid-power D Series Lake model, the D 40:4L is designed for AV integrators specifying conference rooms, boardrooms, training rooms, and commercial meeting spaces where full Lake processing, Dante connectivity, and precise power allocation are required without the larger physical footprint of the 2U D Series models. The Lab Gruppen D 40:4L 4-channel Lake DSP amplifier provides commercial-grade processing and networking in the most space-efficient form factor in the D Series Lake lineup.
Product Description
The D 40:4L uses the IDEEA Class D output stage with direct drive capability for 70V and 100V constant-voltage systems as well as standard Lo-Z loads, removing the need for external transformers in distributed speaker installations. Rational Power Management (RPM) allows the full 4,000W total burst power to be redistributed across the four channels: any channel can scale up to its single-channel maximum, supporting mixed-demand zone designs from a single amplifier.
Each output channel is equipped with a dedicated Lake processing module providing Classic, linear-phase, and FIR crossover options, parametric EQ, delay, and LimiterMax peak and RMS limiters. Input selection is per-channel from four balanced analog inputs with Iso-Float ground isolation, four AES/EBU digital inputs supporting up to 192 kHz at 24-bit resolution, or eight channels of dual-redundant Dante audio with AES67 support, with programmable analog failover. Dual RJ45 Ethernet ports handle Lake Controller and Dante Controller traffic. Third-party integration with Q-Sys, MediaMatrix, and other control systems is available via UDP Ethernet. The CAFE design software includes the Equipment Specification Predictor for accurate mains, cooling, and UPS planning. Mains features include Under-Voltage Limiting (UVL), Breaker Emulation Limiter (BEL) at 15A threshold, Power Factor Correction greater than 0.98, and a regulated switch-mode power supply. The slimline 1U chassis includes per-channel touch-button mutes, tri-color LED status indicators, a removable dust filter, and terminal block output connectors rated at 1000V/41A accepting cables up to 8mm².
Key Features
- 4,000W Total Burst Power with RPM — Rational Power Management distributes total power freely across all four channels; any channel can scale to single-channel maximum via RPM configuration.
- IDEEA Class D with Direct Drive CV — Direct drive at 70V and 100V eliminates the need for external constant-voltage transformers; Lo-Z loads from 2 to 16 ohms also supported.
- Full Lake DSP Per Channel — Classic/linear-phase/FIR crossover, parametric EQ, delay, and LimiterMax peak and RMS limiters on each output channel.
- 8x8 Dual-Redundant Dante — AES67-compliant Dante with daisy-chain and redundant network topologies; configurable latency from 0.25ms.
- Per-Channel Input Routing — Analog (Iso-Float), AES3 digital, or Dante selectable per channel with programmable analog failover.
- 1U Slim Chassis — 483 x 44 x 425mm, 8.3 kg — half the rack height of the D 80:4L and above, ideal for space-constrained AV racks.
- Breaker Emulation Limiter (BEL) — Configurable 15A threshold prevents mains circuit breaker trips in shared power environments.
- Auto Power Down / Adaptive Rail Control — Configurable energy-saving features reduce power consumption during idle periods.
- Q-Sys and MediaMatrix Integration — Third-party control via UDP Ethernet protocol for enterprise AV control system integration.
- Voice Alarm Ready — On-board load monitoring, system surveillance, and redundant input support for PA/VA applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How does the D 40:4L differ from the D 80:4L?
A: The D 40:4L delivers 4,000W total burst power in a 1U chassis versus 8,000W in a 2U chassis for the D 80:4L. Both models share the same Lake DSP architecture, Dante networking, and RPM power management. The D 40:4L uses the IDEEA Class D output stage (with direct drive CV capability) while the D 80:4L and above use the Class-TD stage. Choose the D 40:4L for space-constrained rack installations requiring full Lake processing at lower power levels.
Q: Does the D 40:4L require external transformers for 70V or 100V speaker distribution?
A: No. The IDEEA Class D output stage provides direct drive at 70V and 100V constant voltage, so no external transformers are required for Hi-Z distributed speaker systems.
Q: Can the D 40:4L integrate with Q-Sys or other room control systems?
A: Yes. The D Series Lake platform supports Q-Sys, MediaMatrix, and other third-party control systems via UDP Ethernet protocol. Lake Controller handles DSP configuration and Dante Controller manages Dante audio routing.
Q: What is the Breaker Emulation Limiter (BEL) on the D 40:4L?
A: BEL is a configurable current draw limiter that prevents the amplifier from triggering mains circuit breakers. On the D 40:4L, BEL is set to a 15A maximum threshold, which can be programmed to match the profile of the mains breaker protecting the circuit.
Q: How many Lake processing modules are included in the D 40:4L?
A: Four Lake processing modules are included, one dedicated to each output channel. Each module provides Classic, linear-phase, and FIR crossover options, parametric EQ, delay, and LimiterMax peak and RMS limiters.
Q: What happens to audio if the Dante network connection is lost?
A: The D 40:4L supports programmable failover to analog input on a per-channel basis. In redundant Dante configurations, automatic switchover to the backup network path maintains audio continuity.
Q: What warranty and support apply to the D 40:4L?
A: Lab Gruppen D Series products carry the manufacturer's standard warranty. Creation Networks provides pre-sales specification support and can connect customers with authorized Lab Gruppen service and warranty resources.
