Product Overview

The BrightSign CBL-USBC-USBA-RS232 is a USB-C to USB-A and 3.5mm serial adapter for the LS423 and LS424 media players. It splits the single USB-C port on an LS4 player into a USB-A port for peripherals and a 3.5mm serial connection for data I/O. This BrightSign USB-C serial adapter is the part to specify when an LS424 needs to talk to a display, a controller or a USB device.

Product Description

The LS423 and LS424 have one USB 2.0 Type-C port, and BrightSign routes both USB host and serial signals through it. BrightSign's LS424 hardware documentation states that the Type-C serial port uses TTL signaling on the A2/A3 and B2/B3 pins and enumerates as port 0. The CBL-USBC-USBA-RS232 breaks those signals out to a 3.5mm serial jack, and also provides a standard USB-A port for touch sensors, button panels, keyboards or barcode scanners.

Serial on the LS424 is disabled by default. BrightSign documents enabling it through the player registry with BrightScript or the JavaScript registry API; enabling it from the Debug Console does not persist after a reboot, so set it in the registry for permanent installs. The LS424 USB-C connector can supply up to 0.5A for peripherals, which is enough for many low-power USB devices.

The LS423 and LS424 are discontinued Series 4 models, so this adapter mainly supports existing LS4 deployments. For new LS-class projects, look at the Series 5 BrightSign LS425 or BrightSign LS445, and see the BrightSign collection for players with dedicated serial and GPIO ports.

Key Features

  • USB-A and serial from one port — The adapter breaks the LS4 USB-C port out to a USB-A host port and a 3.5mm serial jack.
  • Serial data I/O — The 3.5mm serial connection lets an LS423 or LS424 send and receive control strings to displays or control systems.
  • USB peripheral support — The USB-A port accepts USB devices such as button panels, keyboards and barcode scanners.
  • Peripheral power — The LS424 USB-C connector supplies up to 0.5A, enough for many low-power USB peripherals.
  • Registry-controlled serial — Serial can be enabled in the player registry so it stays active through reboots.
