In Cisco environments, the gateways join Cisco Unified Survivable Remote Site Telephony (SRST) as supported devices, preserving local paging when a WAN outage cuts access to the centralized Cisco Unified Communications Manager — a critical capability during emergencies that may themselves cause the outage. Where third-party notification applications are not required, the gateways register as SIP devices directly to a SIP server or VoIP communications manager for critical alert and public address applications.
