Product Overview

The Panamax SEP-200 service entrance protection is a whole-facility surge protection device installed at the electrical service entrance panel to defend against large voltage surges before they can reach AV rack equipment, major appliances, or sensitive electronic systems anywhere in the building. As the first line of defense in a layered surge protection strategy, the SEP-200 intercepts surges at the main panel — where utility power enters the facility — reducing the surge energy that downstream rack-level power conditioners and AV equipment must absorb. Rated for split/single phase panels up to 400 amps and carrying a 60kA per-wire maximum surge capacity, the SEP-200 is appropriate for commercial AV infrastructure protection across conference centers, houses of worship, government facilities, and commercial buildings with substantial AV investments.

Product Description

Panamax SEP-200 Service Entrance Protection

High-voltage surges reach AV systems via two primary paths: through the AC power lines from the utility grid, and through signal lines (coaxial, LAN, telephone). Rack-level power conditioners address signal lines and provide secondary protection on the AC path, but they are not rated to absorb the largest surge events that can occur during direct or nearby lightning strikes, utility switching transients, or major equipment switching within the facility. The SEP-200 addresses the AC power path at the highest-energy point — the service entrance — where it can absorb the bulk of a large surge event before any energy propagates into the building's branch circuits.

Installation is at the main electrical panel by a licensed electrician. The SEP-200 connects via three wires plus a ground conductor (stranded bare ends, 19-inch leads) to the main service panel in a standard parallel configuration. It is rated for 120/240V single-phase service at 50/60 Hz, meets ANSI C62.41 requirements, and can be installed indoors or outdoors. The all-metal housing features a flame-resistant design and built-in diagnostics indicators. Maximum surge capacity is 60kA per wire at 8x20 microsecond waveform, with 2700 Joules energy dissipation rating and 20,000A interrupt rating. Maximum continuous operating voltage is 130V.

Panamax specifies that the SEP-200 is intended to complement, not replace, rack-level surge protection. Commercial AV installations should deploy the SEP-200 at the service entrance and continue using Panamax power conditioners at the rack level for a complete layered protection strategy. Together, service entrance protection and rack-level conditioners address surges at both the facility level and the equipment level, providing the most complete protection available for commercial AV infrastructure. The SEP-200 carries a 5-year product warranty and a $10,000 three-year connected major appliance protection policy for the original owner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where is the SEP-200 installed?

The SEP-200 is installed at the main electrical service entrance panel — the primary electrical panel where utility power enters the building. It connects directly to the main panel via three wires plus a ground conductor. Installation must be performed by a licensed electrician. It cannot be plugged into a standard outlet; it is a hardwired panel-level device.

Q: Does the SEP-200 replace rack-level surge protection?

No. The SEP-200 is the first layer of a layered surge protection strategy, not a replacement for rack-level power conditioners. Panamax explicitly recommends using secondary plug-in or rack-mount protectors at the equipment level in addition to the SEP-200. Service entrance protection reduces the energy of large surges before they reach branch circuits; rack-level power conditioners handle the residual surge energy that passes through, as well as smaller surges originating within the building's electrical system.

Q: What service amperage does the SEP-200 support?

The SEP-200 is rated for split/single phase panels up to 400 amps, covering the electrical service found in most commercial buildings, conference centers, houses of worship, and other facilities where commercial AV systems are installed.

Q: Does installation require a licensed electrician?

Yes. The SEP-200 is hardwired into the main electrical service panel and must be installed by a licensed electrician. Working in a live electrical panel involves significant shock hazard. Most commercial building electrical codes also require that panel-level modifications be performed and inspected by a licensed professional.

Q: Can the SEP-200 be installed outdoors?

Yes. The SEP-200 is rated for both indoor and outdoor installation, with an operating temperature range of -40°F to +176°F. This makes it suitable for installation in outdoor electrical enclosures, equipment pads, or unconditioned utility rooms in commercial facilities.

Q: What does the $10,000 appliance protection policy cover?

The SEP-200 includes a three-year, $10,000 connected major appliance protection policy for the original owner when purchased from an authorized dealer. It covers major motor-driven household appliances (refrigerator, freezer, oven, range, washer, dryer, ceiling fan, dishwasher) that are damaged by an AC power or lightning surge. The SEP-200 must show evidence of surge damage to qualify. This policy does not cover AV electronics; for AV equipment protection, pair the SEP-200 with Panamax rack-level power conditioners that carry their own connected equipment protection policies.

Q: How does service entrance protection benefit an AV system specifically?

Large utility surges — from lightning, utility switching, or grid disturbances — enter a facility at the service entrance with energy levels that can overwhelm even high-quality rack-level surge protectors. The SEP-200 absorbs the bulk of this energy at the panel, dramatically reducing what reaches downstream equipment. AV electronics, which contain sensitive DSPs, amplifiers, and display drivers, benefit significantly from this first-stage protection, as even surges that do not immediately destroy equipment can cause cumulative degradation that shortens component life.
