Product Overview
The SurgeX SEQ-1U is a 1U rack-mount, 120V 20-amp programmable AC power sequencer built for commercial AV installations where rack space is at a premium. As a purpose-built 1U programmable AV power sequencer, it delivers the same three-bank power sequencing logic and Advanced Series Mode surge elimination as the full-size SEQ in a single rack space. It is the preferred choice for huddle rooms, smaller conference rooms, and AV-over-IP deployments where a compact, integrator-friendly sequencing solution is required without sacrificing protection quality or control system integration capability.
Product Description
The SEQ-1U provides eight 120V rear-panel receptacles: two always-on outlets and six across three sequenced banks of varying size, with all programming accessible via the front panel. The 1U form factor makes it particularly well suited for compact AV racks in conference rooms, digital signage infrastructure closets, and smaller multi-zone audio systems where every rack unit counts but reliable power sequencing remains non-negotiable.
Like its larger sibling, the SEQ-1U is microprocessor-controlled and stores all configuration in non-volatile memory, so sequencing parameters, voltage thresholds, and power-failure recovery behavior survive power outages without manual reprogramming. Setup is performed entirely from the front panel and all signal and power connections are made at the rear, simplifying installation and in-service adjustments.
The unit includes three remote control inputs compatible with DC voltages from 5 to 30V or contact closures, enabling direct integration with Crestron, AMX, Extron, and other building control platforms. A programmable 12V DC output can drive LEDs or a relay for visual confirmation, and the auxiliary relay output can be used to trigger or control other SurgeX products in the same installation. An optional password protects the programming against unauthorized modification.
SurgeX Advanced Series Mode technology provides zero let-through voltage on surge events up to 6,000 volts, with no diversion to ground and no introduction of common-mode noise — both critical for installations where audio equipment is sharing the same power infrastructure. The unit carries a UL 1449 A-1-1 rating, the highest classification under UL Adjunct Endurance Testing, and meets federal Grade A, Class 1, Mode 1 specifications under CIDA-A-55818.
Key Features
- 1U Rack-Mount Form Factor — Single rack space construction fits compact AV racks in conference rooms, huddle spaces, and infrastructure closets without sacrificing sequencing capability.
- Three Sequenced Outlet Banks — Independently timed banks allow precise control of device power-up order to eliminate inrush current stacking and prevent audible pops at amplifier outputs.
- Advanced Series Mode Surge Elimination — Zero let-through voltage on surges up to 6,000V; no ground contamination or common-mode disturbances introduced into the system.
- Two Always-On Outlets — Dedicated unswitched receptacles for network devices, DSPs, or other equipment that must remain powered independent of sequencing state.
- Remote Control Inputs — Three inputs accept 5–30V DC or contact closures for direct integration with Crestron, AMX, Extron, and similar AV control processors.
- Programmable 12V DC Output — Drives LEDs or small relays for visual status indication or electromechanical confirmation feedback within the rack.
- Non-Volatile Memory — All programmed settings are retained through power outages; configurable for auto-restore or manual restart after a power failure.
- Password Protection — Up to six-character password locks the configuration against unauthorized changes in shared or public-access installations.
- Auxiliary Relay Output — Provides a normally-open contact pair to control or cascade other SurgeX products within larger AV rack systems.
- UL 1449 A-1-1 Rating — Highest available UL Adjunct Endurance Test classification, confirming sustained protection across 1,000 surges at 6,000V without failure.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How does the SEQ-1U differ from the full-size SEQ?
- The SEQ-1U occupies a single rack unit (1U) and provides eight outlets across three sequenced banks. The SEQ is a 2U unit with fourteen outlets. Both use identical Advanced Series Mode protection and the same remote control interface, but the SEQ-1U is better suited for compact rack configurations where space is constrained.
- Can the SEQ-1U control other devices in the rack via its relay output?
- Yes. The auxiliary relay output provides a normally-open contact pair rated for low-voltage switching, which can be used to trigger other SurgeX products or small control relays within the same rack installation.
- Is the SEQ-1U compatible with Crestron and AMX control systems?
- Yes. The three remote inputs accept DC voltages from 5 to 30V or contact closures, which are directly compatible with relay module outputs on Crestron, AMX, Extron, and similar commercial AV control processors.
- What is non-volatile memory and why does it matter for AV installations?
- Non-volatile memory retains all programming data — including time delays, voltage thresholds, and power-failure recovery settings — when the unit loses power. This eliminates the need to reprogram the sequencer after every power outage, which is especially important in unattended commercial installations.
- How does Advanced Series Mode differ from MOV-based surge protection?
- Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) designs divert surge current to ground, which can introduce common-mode noise and degrade over repeated surge events. Advanced Series Mode technology absorbs and dissipates surge energy within the protection circuit itself, providing zero let-through voltage without ground contamination and without degrading over time.
- What happens if the line voltage drops below an acceptable level?
- The SEQ-1U includes adjustable under-voltage and over-voltage shutdown thresholds. If line voltage falls below the configured minimum or exceeds the maximum, the unit will shut down connected equipment to prevent damage, then automatically restore power once the line voltage returns to within acceptable limits.
- Can multiple SEQ-1U units be used together in a larger installation?
- Yes. Two or more SEQ-1U units can be cascaded using the auxiliary relay output of one unit to trigger the remote input of the next, allowing coordinated multi-bank sequencing across a larger AV system.
