Product Overview

The Lightware UBEX-MMU-X200-16 is the entry-level Matrix Management Unit for the UBEX AV-over-IP optical extender platform, licensed to manage up to 16 endpoints in a virtual matrix configuration over a 10G Ethernet network. It serves as the central control and management device for UBEX transmitter-receiver deployments, presenting the virtual matrix as a traditional crosspoint view in Lightware Device Controller software. The UBEX-MMU-X200-16 is the correct starting unit for any UBEX installation that requires centralized management, firmware distribution, EDID handling, and third-party control system integration from initial deployment.

Product Description

In a UBEX AV-over-IP system, a standard 10G Ethernet switch functions as the crosspoint while the UBEX-MMU-X200-16 provides the management plane: endpoint discovery, crosspoint routing commands, bandwidth monitoring, and EDID management. The unit continuously builds and updates a database of all UBEX devices on the network, including connected but inactive units, and displays this as a familiar matrix crosspoint interface in LDC software. Users communicate directly with the MMU in matrix mode, and the MMU relays commands to each UBEX endpoint transparently.

The -16 variant supports up to 16 UBEX endpoints from initial purchase and is upgradeable via software license (UBEX-MMU-X200-UPG) to 50, 100, 150, or unlimited endpoints without hardware replacement. This makes it appropriate for smaller deployments that anticipate growth without requiring an immediate commitment to higher-tier licensing costs. Third-party control integration is handled via the LW3 protocol over Ethernet or serial, supporting Crestron, Extron, AMX, and similar systems. Advanced EDID Management with 15 user-programmable EDID slots ensures display compatibility is maintained across all endpoints.

Key Features

  • 16-endpoint management capacity — manages up to 16 UBEX transmitter and receiver endpoints from a single unit, upgradeable via license
  • Traditional crosspoint interface — LDC software presents the virtual matrix as a standard crosspoint grid, including inactive endpoints
  • Simultaneous firmware distribution — pushes firmware updates to all connected UBEX units concurrently without per-device count restrictions
  • LW3 protocol third-party control — integrates with Crestron, AMX, Extron, and other control systems over TCP/IP or RS-232
  • Advanced EDID Management — 15 user-programmable EDID slots plus factory presets for consistent source-to-display handshake
  • Bandwidth supervision — monitors and reports real-time bandwidth utilization across the UBEX network
  • Configuration backup and restore — full matrix configuration snapshots for fast recovery or site replication
  • Software upgrade path — licensed upgrades (UBEX-MMU-X200-UPG) allow capacity expansion to 50, 100, 150, or unlimited endpoints without hardware change
  • 1RU rack form factor — standard 19-inch rack mounting with included rack ears, internal 100–240V AC power supply
  • Multiviewer management — supports UBEX receivers operating in multiviewer mode with PIP, PBP, and alpha fade transitions via MMU control

Typical Applications

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the UBEX-MMU-X200-16 be upgraded to support more than 16 endpoints?
Yes. Each UBEX-MMU-X200-UPG license advances the unit by one tier: 16 to 50, 50 to 100, and so on. Two upgrade licenses would take a 16-endpoint unit to 100-endpoint capacity.
What type of Ethernet switch is required for a UBEX system?
A managed 10G Ethernet switch is required to act as the crosspoint. The switch must support multicast and IGMP for proper SDVoE operation. Lightware offers compatible switches in the TPN-LWS product line.
Does the MMU need to be online for the UBEX extenders to pass signal?
UBEX extenders can pass signal without the MMU once routing is established. The MMU is required for routing changes, firmware updates, and EDID management operations.
How does third-party control system integration work?
The UBEX-MMU-X200-16 communicates via Lightware's LW3 protocol over TCP/IP or RS-232. Control processors from Crestron, AMX, Extron, and similar brands can send routing and configuration commands directly to the MMU.
What is the physical installation requirement for the MMU?
The unit occupies 1RU in a standard 19-inch equipment rack. Rack ears are included. Power is supplied via an internal supply connected to a standard IEC power outlet (100–240V AC).
