Product Overview

The Audio-Technica CP8201 is an in-line impedance matching transformer for connecting low-impedance microphones to high-impedance 1/4" line-level inputs. The barrel adapter carries an XLR input connector on one end and a 1/4" phone output on the other. It matches the source impedance so a balanced microphone can drive an unbalanced high-impedance input correctly. The result is cleaner signal transfer with reduced noise over longer cable runs.

Product Description

Audio-Technica CP8201 microphone impedance matching transformer XLR to 1/4 inch

The CP8201 solves a common signal-integrity problem when a low-impedance professional microphone has to feed a high-impedance input such as a 1/4" line-level jack on a mixer, amplifier, or recorder. Connecting a low-impedance source directly to a high-impedance input often produces weak level, dull high frequencies, and excess hum. This barrel transformer matches the impedances so the microphone drives the input as intended. The XLR input accepts a standard balanced microphone cable, while the 1/4" phone output plugs into the destination jack. Because the transformer maintains high-frequency response, the signal stays clear rather than rolling off at the top end. Impedance matching also permits the use of long microphone cables without the signal degradation that an impedance mismatch would otherwise introduce. The design reduces noise pickup along the run, which is valuable in live sound and installed AV systems. For an inexpensive, passive solution to a recurring interconnection issue, the CP8201 is a practical addition to any microphone toolkit. Key Features

  • Impedance Matching — Matches low-impedance microphones to high-impedance electronic inputs for correct signal transfer.
  • XLR to 1/4" Connectors — Provides an XLR input connector and a 1/4" phone output connector in a single in-line barrel.
  • Supports Long Cable Runs — Permits the use of long microphone cables without the degradation of an impedance mismatch.
  • Maintains High-Frequency Response — Preserves high-frequency detail rather than letting it roll off into the input.
  • Reduces Noise Pickup — The transformer design helps reduce noise pickup along the signal path.
