Product Overview
The SonicWall TZ500 High Availability Backup Appliance (01-SSC-0439) is a Gen 6 desktop firewall unit designed exclusively to operate as the passive node in a stateful HA pair. When deployed alongside a primary TZ500, it continuously mirrors active session state and delivers sub-second failover, eliminating downtime caused by hardware failure. This unit cannot function as a standalone firewall and requires an active primary TZ500 with valid security subscriptions. It is the correct replacement or expansion component for SMB and branch-office environments that have already standardized on the TZ500 platform.
Product Description

In a stateful high availability deployment, the TZ500 HA pair operates as a single logical firewall. The primary unit processes all traffic while the backup unit receives continuous state synchronization — including active sessions, VPN tunnels, ARP tables, and NAT mappings. If the primary unit fails or loses connectivity, the backup assumes the active role within milliseconds, maintaining existing sessions without user interruption.
The TZ500 backup appliance ships without a wireless radio, matching the wired-only profile of the standard TZ500. It provides 8 × 10/100/1000Base-T RJ-45 ports and delivers firewall inspection throughput of 1.4 Gbps, application inspection throughput of 1.3 Gbps, and IPS throughput of 1.0 Gbps. VPN throughput reaches 1.0 Gbps, and the appliance supports up to 150,000 concurrent SPI connections. Encryption support includes DES, 3DES, AES-128/192/256, MD5, and SHA-1.
Security subscriptions — including IPS, anti-malware, URL filtering, content filtering, application control, and DDoS/DoS protection — are licensed on the primary unit. The backup appliance inherits and enforces those services automatically during and after failover. No separate subscription purchase is required for the backup node under standard SonicWall HA licensing terms.
The TZ500 is a Gen 6 platform. Organizations planning new deployments should evaluate the Gen 7 TZ370 or TZ470 product lines, which offer higher throughput, SonicOS 7.0, integrated SD-WAN, and a longer support horizon. The TZ500 HA backup unit is appropriate for existing TZ500 installations that need redundancy without replacing the full infrastructure.
This unit has a desktop form factor with dimensions of 8.9" W × 5.9" D × 1.4" H and weighs 2.02 lb. It is manufactured in Taiwan.
Key Features
- Stateful HA Failover — Mirrors primary TZ500 session state continuously; sub-second switchover preserves active connections during hardware failure.
- 1.4 Gbps Firewall Throughput — Matches primary TZ500 performance specifications for consistent enforcement during failover.
- 8 × Gigabit RJ-45 Ports — Eight 10/100/1000Base-T interfaces align with the primary unit's port layout for symmetric HA cabling.
- UTM Service Inheritance — Enforces IPS, anti-malware, content filtering, and application control policies licensed on the primary unit — no duplicate subscription required.
- 150,000 SPI Connections — Supports high session-count environments with stateful packet inspection at scale.
- 1.0 Gbps VPN Throughput — Maintains site-to-site and remote access VPN tunnels through failover without renegotiation.
- AES-256 Encryption — Full suite including DES, 3DES, AES-128/192/256, MD5, and SHA-1 for IPsec and SSL VPN.
- No Wireless — Wired-only design; appropriate for environments where wireless is managed separately.
Typical Applications
- SMB branch offices requiring continuous firewall uptime under a hardware-failure scenario
- Retail or healthcare locations where session persistence during failover is a compliance or operational requirement
- Existing TZ500 deployments adding redundancy without a full platform migration
- Distributed enterprise edge sites standardized on Gen 6 SonicWall infrastructure
- Network refresh planning where HA is added ahead of a future Gen 7 migration

Frequently Asked Questions
Can this unit be used as a standalone firewall?
No. The 01-SSC-0439 is exclusively an HA backup appliance. It must be paired with a primary TZ500 unit and will not process traffic independently.
Do I need to purchase separate security subscriptions for the backup unit?
Under SonicWall's standard HA licensing, the backup unit inherits the security services licensed on the primary. Verify your specific licensing agreement with SonicWall or your reseller before deployment.
How fast is failover between primary and backup?
In a stateful HA configuration, the backup mirrors active session state in real time. Failover is sub-second, and existing sessions — including VPN tunnels — are preserved without renegotiation.
Is the TZ500 still supported by SonicWall?
The TZ500 is a Gen 6 platform. Support timelines are published by SonicWall. Organizations planning new purchases should evaluate the Gen 7 TZ370 or TZ470 for a longer support horizon and higher throughput.
Does this unit support wireless?
No. The TZ500 HA backup appliance has no wireless radio. Wireless functionality, if required, should be managed via separate access points.
Where can I order the rack mount kit for the TZ500?
The TZ500 Series uses a different rack mount kit (01-SSC-0438), which is not currently listed on Creation Networks. Contact us at creationnetworks.net for availability.
