Product Overview

The Lightware MMX8x4-HT420M is a standalone 8x4 matrix switcher from the MMX conference room series, with eight mixed inputs (HDMI 1.4 and TPS2/HDBaseT) and four TPS2 outputs, combined with dedicated balanced analog audio I/O and a full multi-port control suite. Its asymmetric 8x4 crosspoint — more inputs than outputs — is purpose-designed for rooms where multiple presentation sources must be routed to a focused set of displays, such as a training room with one primary display and one confidence monitor, or a boardroom driving a videowall and a ceiling projector from multiple sources. AV integrators specifying a 8x4 HDBaseT HDMI matrix with analog audio and conference room automation will find this model correctly sized for its application.

Product Description

The MMX8x4-HT420M routes 4K/UHD signals (30Hz RGB 4:4:4, 60Hz YCbCr 4:2:0) with full HDCP and 3D support. TPS2 outputs extend HDMI 1.4 over single CAT5e/CAT6/CAT7 cables at distances up to 100m (CAT5e AWG24) and 170m in Long Reach mode for Full HD (CAT7 AWG23). PoE 48V is available on all TPS I/O ports for extender powering. Balanced analog audio connectors at both input and output positions (5-pole Phoenix) provide localized audio management within the matrix itself.

The built-in Event Manager delivers automated room control — display power sequences, input switching on signal detection, screen control via relay — without an external control processor. Relay outputs, GPIO, RS-232 ports, serial/IR ports, and IR ports provide the same control port density as the full MMX8x8-HT series, including Ethernet injection via TPS for LAN extension to remote endpoints. Advanced EDID Management handles source resolution management per input port.

Key Features

  • 8x4 Asymmetric Crosspoint — Eight inputs, four TPS2 outputs; optimized for presentation-focused room designs with fewer displays than sources.
  • Mixed HDMI and TPS2 Inputs — Accepts HDMI 1.4 and HDBaseT sources in the same input matrix.
  • 4x TPS2 Outputs — All outputs via HDBaseT, distributing video, audio, Ethernet, and RS-232 over single CAT cable to displays.
  • 4K/UHD Support — 30Hz RGB 4:4:4 and 60Hz YCbCr 4:2:0 with HDCP and 3D.
  • Up to 170m TPS Extension — Long Reach mode at Full HD over CAT7 AWG23; 100m at 4K 30Hz.
  • PoE 48V on All TPS Ports — Remote extender powering without external injectors.
  • Balanced Analog Audio I/O — 5-pole Phoenix connectors at input and output positions for audio embedding and de-embedding.
  • Built-in Event Manager — Automated room switching and control logic without external control processor.
  • 2x RS-232 + 4x IR + Relay + GPIO — Full control port suite for display management, screen control, and room integration.
  • Ethernet via TPS — LAN extension to remote room endpoints over the same CAT cable as video.
  • Advanced EDID Management — Per-input EDID emulation with factory and user-defined profiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose an 8x4 matrix instead of an 8x8?
The 8x4 configuration is cost-appropriate for rooms with up to four displays and up to eight sources. Paying for output capacity that won't be used in a fixed room design adds unnecessary cost. The MMX8x4-HT420M delivers the same control port density and feature set as the 8x8 models at the correct output count for smaller display environments.
Are all outputs HDBaseT or are there HDMI output options?
All four outputs on the MMX8x4-HT420M are TPS2 (HDBaseT). For mixed HDMI and TPS2 output configurations in an 8x4 frame, consult with Creation Networks on alternative MMX or MX series configurations.
What TPS extenders work with the MMX8x4-HT420M outputs?
All Lightware HDBaseT receivers (HDMI-TPS-RX86, RX87, RX96, RX97 series, and others) and HDBaseT-compliant third-party receivers are compatible. HDBaseT-compliant displays with built-in receivers also connect directly.
Is audio de-embedding available at the TPS2 output ports?
Yes. The balanced analog audio connectors adjacent to output positions allow de-embedding of HDMI-embedded audio from the TPS2 output signal, providing analog audio for room amplifiers or DSP inputs without a separate audio processor at each display location.
Can the Event Manager handle display power sequencing?
Yes. The Event Manager can be configured to send RS-232 power-on commands to connected displays and projectors in sequence when a source signal is detected, and send power-off commands after a configurable no-signal timeout — automating the full room power cycle without external control processor programming.
Where can I buy the MMX8x4-HT420M?
Available through Creation Networks at creationnetworks.net.
