The AM40 iQ Appliance was introduced to address the gap between display hardware and compute capability in education settings: a SMART Board display that lacks both an OPS PC module and an iQ appliance requires a connected external computer for every use session. Installing the AM40 removes that dependency, enabling the display to function as a standalone interactive station for lesson delivery, group activity, and content review without any computer connection. The RK3399 processor (dual-core Cortex-A72 + quad-core Cortex-A53, 2 GHz) with 4 GB DDR3L RAM and 32 GB eMMC 5.1 storage provides sufficient performance for SMART's iQ software suite, web browsing, and third-party educational applications. Bluetooth 4.2 enables mobile device connectivity via QR code scanning to the SMART kapp app, allowing participants to share and annotate from their own devices. Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with 2×2 MIMO provides reliable wireless connectivity in the classroom. For displays in the Gen 5 series, a wired RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet port is available. Two USB 3.0 Type-A ports provide peripheral and storage connectivity. An HDMI 1.4 output supports connection of a secondary display. Power requirements of 12–19 VDC at 2.5–1.6A are supplied directly from the display's accessory slot. The AM40 is compatible with SMART Board 6000, 6000 Pro, MX, 7000, and 7000 Pro series displays. It is not compatible with GX series displays (which use the AMG1) or newer MX-V4/V5 displays that have iQ built in.
What is the difference between AM40 Education and AM40 Enterprise?
The Education variant (UGK-AM40-EDU) is licensed for SMART Board 6000 and 7000 series education displays. The Enterprise variant (UGK-AM40-ENT) is licensed for SMART Board 6000 Pro and 7000 Pro displays and includes SMART Meeting Pro features.
Do students need to install an app?
Students scan a QR code on the display to download the SMART kapp app from the App Store (iOS 9+) or Google Play (Android 4.4.4+). After initial installation, reconnection is seamless.
Does the AM40 replace an external PC?
For iQ-based workflows (whiteboard, browser, screen sharing, SMART Learning Suite), yes. For full Windows applications, a SMART PCM module (sold separately) would be the alternative.
