Product Overview

The Planar MX46U-L-ERO (SKU 998-0284-00) is a 46-inch Clarity Matrix G3 LCD video wall display in landscape orientation with 800 nit high-brightness output and Planar ERO (Extended Ruggedness and Optics) optically bonded glass. It is the high-brightness upgrade within the G3 46-inch family — delivering 60% more luminance than the 500 nit LX46U models — purpose-built for 24/7 operation in environments with significant ambient light such as retail atria, broadcast studios, trading floors, and transportation hubs.

Product Description

Planar MX46U-L-ERO 46-inch Clarity Matrix G3 800 Nit Landscape ERO LCD Video Wall

The MX46U-L-ERO is the MX-series (high-brightness) variant of the Clarity Matrix G3 46-inch platform, directly differentiated from the LX-series LX46U models by its 800 nit brightness rating. Where the LX46U family operates at 500 nit and targets controlled-light environments, the MX46U-L-ERO is specified for installations with high ambient light that would wash out a 500 nit display — large retail environments with skylights, transit concourses, and open-plan command centers with extensive window exposure.

Beyond brightness, the MX46U-L-ERO shares the full G3 platform: 1.7mm minimum tiled bezel width for a near-seamless wall, off-board electronics architecture for minimal panel depth and maximum reliability, n+1 hot-swap redundant power supplies, and Leyard WallDirector centralized management. The ERO optically bonded glass further enhances visibility in bright environments by eliminating the internal air-gap reflections that reduce contrast on non-bonded displays.

The off-board Video Controller (VC) embeds advanced Big Picture Plus video wall processing directly into the product — the first LCD video wall to do so — supporting multiple 4K @ 60Hz signals, picture-in-picture, 4K quadview, and Picture-over-Picture layouts. HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2 connectivity are both supported.

Key Features

  • 46-inch LCD panel in landscape orientation — 1920x1080 Full HD
  • 800 nit high-brightness — 60% brighter than 500 nit LX46U models for high ambient light environments
  • Planar ERO optically bonded glass for anti-reflection and impact protection
  • 1.7mm minimum tiled bezel width for near-seamless video wall arrays
  • 3.6-inch (91 mm) installed depth via EasyAxis Mounting System
  • G3 off-board electronics architecture with advanced Video Controller (VC)
  • n+1 hot-swap redundant power supplies (Remote Power Supply, RPS)
  • Planar Big Picture Plus: 4K @ 60Hz, PiP, 4K quadview, multi-source scaling
  • HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2 inputs
  • Leyard WallDirector software for web-based management
  • Optional fiber video extension for secure installations
  • 24/7 mission-critical rated

Typical Applications

  • Large retail environments with natural light (skylights, atriums) where 500 nit is insufficient
  • Broadcast and television studio video walls under high-intensity studio lighting
  • Trading floors and financial data centers with open-plan high-ambient-light layouts
  • Airport and transit concourse information displays with ceiling skylights
  • Sports arena and stadium operations centers
  • Any 24/7 mission-critical environment with ambient light levels exceeding 500 lux

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose 800 nit over 500 nit — what is the real-world difference?
Brightness is the primary factor in display visibility under ambient light. A 500 nit display becomes difficult to read when ambient light exceeds approximately 300–400 lux. The 800 nit MX46U-L-ERO maintains legibility in environments up to roughly 600–700 lux — typical of retail spaces with skylights, studios with house lighting at full output, or transit concourses on sunny days. If your installation has uncontrolled ambient light, 800 nit is the correct specification.
Is the MX46U-L-ERO compatible with the same mounting hardware as the LX46U family?
Yes. The MX46U-L-ERO uses the same EasyAxis Mounting System and shares mounting hardware compatibility with the LX46U landscape, portrait, and VESA variants. Mixed arrays of MX and LX panels on the same mounting frame are mechanically supported.
Does the ERO glass affect touch capability?
The standard ERO glass does not include touch functionality. If touch is required at 800 nit, contact Planar or Creation Networks for touch-overlay options compatible with the MX46U series.
What is the embedded Video Controller and how does it differ from external processing?
The G3 Video Controller is integrated directly into the off-board electronics unit rather than being a separate rack-mounted device. This reduces cable runs, simplifies installation, and provides Big Picture Plus processing — including 4K @ 60Hz multi-source input, PiP, and 4K quadview — without requiring an additional processing appliance.
Can the MX46U-L-ERO be used in a mixed array with 500 nit LX46U panels?
Physically yes, but brightness uniformity across the wall will be inconsistent. For best visual results, all panels in a tiled array should have the same brightness specification. Mixed-brightness arrays are not recommended for content-critical applications.
What are the power supply redundancy options?
The Remote Power Supply (RPS) features n+1 hot-swap redundant modules, redundant AC input circuitry, and health monitoring. If one power module fails, the remaining modules continue to power the displays without interruption or manual intervention.
